When Does Pongal Occur?
Pongal is celebrated every year in the month of January, typically from the 13th to the 16th, according to the Tamil solar calendar. It marks the harvest season and starts on the last day of the Tamil month Margazhi, moving into the month of Thai. The main day of Pongal, known as Thai Pongal, falls on January 14th or 15th, depending on the year.

The Four Days of Pongal
Bhogi Pongal (Day 1):
The first day is for thanking Lord Indra, the rain god, for a good harvest.
Thai Pongal (Day 2):
The main day of the festival is spent cooking the special sweet dish, Pongal, and offering it to the Sun God (Surya). Families cook the dish in new clay pots outside and pray for happiness and prosperity.
Mattu Pongal (Day 3):
This day is for honoring cattle, which are important for farming.
Kaanum Pongal (Day 4):
